Match your fly outfit to the size of the stream- do not be tempted by the small stream small rod argument- Rods of around 9 feet or slightly shorter are optimum for most streams. Use a line weight lighter than the rod's rating to improve presentation. Small streams with smaller trout only require 2 or 3 weight outfits- medium sized rivers- 3-4 weight outfits and large exposed rivers 5 and 6 weight outfits are ideal.
