The earliest exoplanets discovered were "hot jupiters" -- large planets, presumably gas giants, which orbit their primaries even more closely than Mercury orbits the Sun.

Two questions: (1) Would it be hot on the dark side of such a planet (as it is on Venus), or cold (as it is on Mercury), assuming a sunlike star at the center of this planet's orbit? (2) Why aren't the atmospheres of these
